Hello, my name’s Bee! I’m a professional videogame programmer living on Canada’s west coast. I grew up there too, at a particular spot on the north bank of stɑl̓əw̓ where its arms split into the sea.
About This Blog
I like to write essays about videogames! Many of my best ones are hosted here. A few interesting tags you could check out:
gamecrit: A catch-all category containing all the essays I’ve ever written about videogames! One of my latest major projects in this category is “The Hero of Time”, a hybrid work of journaling & criticism inspired by the “New Games Journalism” movement of decades past.
corporate-future-nightmare-world: A few essays from the dark period of 2019-2022, when I was hosting my work on a different domain and running a little publication called Corporate Future Nightmare World. These pieces seek to capture the spirit of those times by being incendiary, angry and vengeful! I treasure each of the essays I wrote for this little website fairly equally, but my favorite of the bunch might be “Launder Launder Launder, Win Win Win” (which offers a hard, bitter look at the issue of labour abuse within the videogame industry).
detritus-trilogy: A trio of essays exploring the timeless question of why certain creations become popular (and why others do not). These were among the first essays I ever published, and in many ways they still represent my very best writing! The collection includes “Fashion, Emptiness and Problem Attic” (which is perhaps my best-read piece) as well as the esoteric “Form & Its Usurpers” (which is perhaps my longest-ever piece, lol)
gratificationordeath: A collection of essays concerning the tension between videogames as art or whatever & videogames as ‘gratification devices’. My favorite piece within this set is probably “Hard In The Hinterlands”, which offers up a strange comparison between the climax of a AAA videogame (in this case Dragon Age: Inquisition) & the climax of an adult film.
photography: I take a lot of pictures, often of very good birds
Other Stuff
I have a little YouTube channel where I post sometimes! In particular I’d suggest checking out the Sprawl Show ‘n Tells playlist, where my newer video stuff lives.
Personal game projects & other stuff exist on my itch page.
I also curate various pop-up arcades around Vancouver with an organization called Heart Projector.
